Originally from Québec, Marthe Carrier is the co-founder and director of Galerie B-312, an artist-run centre. She completed a Bachelor’s degree at Concordia University (1988) and a Master’s degree at UQAM (1992) in Visual Arts. As director of Galerie B-312, she has developed several exchange projects on the international scene (Wales, Lebanon, Norway, Finland, Serbia, Japan, Lyon). She is interested in the impact of globalization, mobility and new technologies on artistic practice. Through large-scale projects, she encourages meeting and the sharing of experiences between the different artistic communities. She has curated several exhibitions including Anima (2005), Les vingt ans de la Galerie B-312 (2011), Background (2012), Six peintres, deux écoles, trois lieux (2014) and La croix du mont Royal, by Pierre Ayot (2016). She is a regular member of peer juries and is involved in the Regroupement des centres d’artistes autogérés du Québec (RCAAQ). She is President of the Conseil des diplômés de la Faculté des arts de l’UQAM.
Nicolas Mavrikakis is an art critic. He is currently working for Le Devoir (newspaper) after writing in Voir Montréal from 1998 to 2013. He has also written exhibition reviews and texts for numerous Canadian magazines, and has been a member of the editorial committees of ETC and Spirale. From 2010 to 2012, he was assistant director at the magazine Espace. Nicolas Mavrikakis also curates exhibitions, among others, the Biennale de sculpture de Saint-Jean-Port-Joli (2014); Déclic 70, who won the 2014 Choix du public Award from the Conseil des arts de Montréal; Entreprise collective (Espace Création Loto-Québec, 2011); Artefact Montréal (2007); the 25e Symposium d’art contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul (2007); and Comment devenir artiste (2005). In addition, he teaches art history and French literature, but has also taught the history of film, dance, the arts and communications. In 2015, he published a book entitled La peur de l’image (Éditions Nota bene). In 2017, he will publish the biography of Pierre Théberge, who was director of two museums in Canada.
We are talking about us in the theme book of the Conseil des arts de Montréal - 32e Grand Prix published this Saturday in Le Devoir. We are pleased that our contribution to the Rétrospective Pierre Ayot has made us one of the organizations that are running for the Grand Prix.
Congratulations to Cas Public and its director, Hélène Blackburn, for winning the Grand Prix and to all other finalists who have stood out in the course of the year 2016.
Let’s not forget that BAnQ - Grande Bibliothèque proposed the idea of presenting a retrospective exhibition on the practice of Pierre Ayot. Nicolas Mavrikakis, who was the curator, invited many places of diffusion to join this retrospective. This is how was born the Événement Pierre Ayot, also named the Rétrospective Pierre Ayot, which took place in seven venues: BAnQ - Grande Bibliothèque, Fondation Guido Molinari, Galerie Graff, Joyce Yahouda Gallery, Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, Musée de Joliette and our artist-run centre, Galerie B-312. Each of us elaborated exhibition and public art projects in connection with Pierre Ayot’s career and practice. The recreation of La croix du mont Royal is an original idea of Nicolas. Galerie B-312 has enthusiastically joined this project. Together, Nicolas and I were the curators of this project, until its realization.
