Drone: The Automated Image
Curator: Paul Wombell
Webcams and social media sites have now become ubiquitous, integrated into our daily life; we have forgotten that they are silently watching the human condition. Images are shared and exchanged with little consideration for the content depicted. The once private space of the home, previously witnessed only by its inhabitants, is now available online for all to view. For some years, Cheryl Sourkes has been excavating webcams and social media sites, seeking suitable material to make works such as Everybody’s Autobiography (2012), Facebook Albums (2010), and BRB (2010). In these artworks she raises questions about the relationship between voyeurism and surveillance, and the boundaries between public and private.
