—Besides the recreation of La croix du mont Royal (1976-2016)supported by Galerie B-312, the Pierre Ayot retrospective, headed by the curator and art critic Nicolas Mavrikakis, brought together several artists and curators. The retrospective took place in five Montréal venues— Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec - Grande Bibliothèque, Fondation Guido Molinari, Galerie Graff, Galerie Joyce Yahouda and Galerie B-312—, each of them offering specific thematic exhibitions, while the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal and the Musée d’art de Joliette presented a work from their collection. This collaboration between several organizations from different horizons shed light on the practice of an artist who has marked the visual arts in QuébecLa croix du mont Royalreminds us of it in a vibrant, luminous way and full of contemporaneity. Forty years after its creation for Corridart, the artwork once again provoked debates and discussions about the place of art in the public space. As curators Marthe Carrier and Nicolas Mavrikakis have pointed out, « L’art n’a pas à faire consensus. Il questionne, nourrit, fait réfléchir. » ("Art does not have to be a consensus. It questions, feeds, makes people think.") reiterating the importance of respecting artists’ practice, democracy and freedom of expression. Like Pierre Ayot, La croix has been unifying: besides the support of public authorities obtained for its implementation, more than two hundred people contributed financially to its recreation.
