PIERRE STERCKX
LE MAGNIFIQUE ÉCHEC DES SURRÉALISTES
A conference organized by
historian and independent art critic
Marine Van Hoof
Known for his lectures on contemporary culture and art, for his art critics (Télérama, Art Press, Beaux-Arts Magazine) and for his activities as a writer and scriptwriter (CD Rom Magritte), Tintinologue savvy, Lecturer at the Multimedia Master's Degree of the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris and Professor of History of Modern Art at IESA (Paris), the Belgian lecturer Pierre Sterckx invites us to critically question the Surrealist movement, noting the "magnificent" failure of their revolutionary intentions. Reviewing subjects as diverse as representation, sexuality, the Freudian unconscious, popular arts, original primitivity, the place of the spectator, the role of the image in relation to words, and the role of music, he proposes, with historical hindsight, a precise examination of the positions of Breton and his cenacle. The slide lecture will be followed by a question period. A snack will then be offered to the participants.
